Dr. Katherine Helm is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 24 years of experience working with adolescents, adults, couples and groups in multiple clinical settings including college counseling, psychiatric hospitals, community mental health, and private practice. She is the author of multiple books on working with couples and sex education for high school and college students and is also a college professor.
Dr. Helm takes a practical, collaborative, and sensitive approach to providing therapy where clients are the experts on their own lives but work with Dr. Helm to achieve their specific goals. She is comfortable working with a wide variety of diverse clients. She strongly believes in the strength of the relationship between the therapist and the client and uses this relationship as a lens to explore the issues clients bring to therapy.
She utilizes a variety of approaches in the therapy process, and works with clients to access their strengths throughout the struggles they are experiencing in their lives. Her approach is straight-forward, empathetic, cooperative, engaging, and sensitive to clients’ individual needs. Dr. Helm believes that we can often get stuck in patterns that inhibit our personal and emotional growth without realizing it and feels that counseling can be used to explore some of these issues. Dr. Helm strongly believes in the potential of each individual and works with clients to access and maximize this potential.
She received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and her Masters and Doctoral Degrees from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
In her free time, she enjoys watching silly movies, playing with other people’s dogs, and staying physically active.
