Divorce Mediation Services

Fox Valley Institute is pleased to announce that our Clinical Director, Cheryl Frommelt, will now be offering Divorce Mediation services. As an individual, marriage and family therapist with 25 years of experience, Cheryl has seen first hand the negative impact of a drawn out, emotion fueled contentious divorce can have not only on the couple, but their children as well.

Divorce Mediation has become a well established, viable and an affordable alternative to the emotionally and financially costly divorce process. Mediation is not therapy. In Divorce Mediation, the couple hires a neutral third party, called a mediator, to discuss and resolve the issues of their divorce in a fair and equitable way. The mediator never makes decisions for the couple but rather assists them in working together cooperatively to define issues, negotiate settlements and generate strong and fair agreements based upon their unique and personal circumstances. The mediation process can improve communication between the couple, helping them avoid future conflicts, which benefits children.

Mediation is private and confidential with no public record of what occurs in your mediation session. Agreements made in mediation are client driven and created by the couple as opposed to the litigation process and the courts. The couple literally creates their own divorce decree. The mediator ensures that all the matters of concern for both parties are addressed to achieve a non-contested divorce. These issues are covered one at a time, in weekly 60 minute sessions. The couple will continue to meet with their mediator until they feel that all agreements are fair and equitable. The length of the mediation process is determined by the couple.

“The decision to add mediation to my repertoire has been a natural one,” said Cheryl. “While I will remain working with therapy clients at Fox Valley Institute as I have for the past 14 years, I am looking forward to seeing clients in a completely new role as a Divorce Mediator. Being able to help client in these distinct capacities will help me continue to facilitate people in moving forward in the healthiest and most dignified ways possible.” Cheryl added.
