Rick Alford, PhD, BCN.
Dr. Alford brings a companionate, and energetic zeal to the work he does in helping people change. Dr. Alford says, “ This enthusiasm just continues to grow over the years.” He brings over 35 years of experience in providing expert clinical and neuropsychological services to Fox Valley Institute.
“Experience has taught me that we are all unique and dynamic, engineered to change and adapt. We are what we bring to life, and then we continue to change with our experiences in life. Neuroplasticity is the term used to convey how we are programmed to change and adapt right down to our cells.”
“My aim in working with people is to listen and collaborate with them to appreciate the reasons they are seeking help, and then partner with them in how to best harness and use our innate ability to better adapt to our ever-changing world and life.”
With regards to formal education and experience, Dr. Alford graduated from Loyola University of Chicago with his Ph.D. in Psychology, completed a clinical internship at Hines V.A. Hospital in Maywood, with rotations in neuropsychology, spinal cord injury, pain management, and outpatient psychological services. He has post-doctoral training, certifications, and experience in neuropsychology, neurofeedback, and various neurotherapies, as well as cognitive therapy methods. His experience runs from working in large psychiatric hospitals, to busy psychiatric and mental health group practices, as well as numerous consulting and training of other professionals.
“I enjoy most of all working with someone in the office to bring about the change, resolution, and adaptation necessary to best move ahead with life. I see many preteens and teenagers with attention and other behavior difficulties, needing to functionally diagnose what is generating difficulties before understanding what methods may be best for treatment. With adults, I see many individuals with unresolved trauma, difficulties with various forms of anxiety, and depression/mood regulation problems, or just needing help to make desired changes. Also, I have experience with individuals who have encountered some form of head trauma, concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).”
If you would like assistance in any of those areas, I very much look forward to meeting with you so that we may begin to understand the nature of the problem, and then utilize the powerful tools we have to make changes.
