Rick Alford, PhD, BCN.
Dr. Rick Alford brings over 35 years of experience and has an extensive background in providing neuropsychological evaluations, as well as implementing innovative and effective neurotherapies and recommendations.
“My work and experience have taught me that we are complex and dynamic beings, engineered to change and adapt. We each have a unique genetic organization (nature) that continues to develop and is shaped by our experience (nurture). We have known for a good number of years that we possess this powerful adaptation we call neuroplasticity. Our brains are engineered to be in a process of continual change and adaptation. My aim in clinical therapy is to listen, partner in evaluation for an ongoing understanding of how to best harness and use our innate ability to better adapt to our ever-changing world and life.”
With regards to formal education and experience, Dr. Alford graduated from Loyola University of Chicago with his Ph.D. in psychology. He completed a clinical internship at Hines V.A. Hospital in Maywood, with rotations in neuropsychology, spinal cord injury, pain management, and outpatient psychological services. Dr. Alford has postdoctoral certificate and experience in neuropsychology, neurofeedback, and various neuro-stimulation; which may be powerful additions for various psychotherapies and cognitive therapy methods. Dr. Alford has decades of experience that include working at a large, major psychiatric hospital, where he oversaw psychological services, providing inpatient and outpatient services. He has worked with psychiatric and psychological group practices for 20 years.
Dr. Alford uses many innovative techniques, such as non-invasive neuro-stimulation techniques and methods of neurofeedback. Neuropsychological assessment is a specialized form of evaluation:
- Provides information on how certain neurological conditions affect mental health.
- Determines what functional dysregulation is impacting current functioning.
- Identifies what may be accomplished for improved regulation and functioning.
- Evaluates underlying neurological or neurodevelopmental disorder.
These assessments are more comprehensive, offering insight into overall cognitive processes allowing for a more complete treatment plan.
Dr. Alford very much looks forward to working with individuals, helping them begin their journey of understanding the nature of the problem, and utilizing innovative and powerful methods to make positive changes.
